12/14/07 Lady Rams prepare for Upcoming Season
By Trey Cash
The Greene Central women’s varsity basketball team is ready for its upcoming season.
The Lady Rams have five returnees Utopia Jones, Ashley Jones, Darneka Waters, Shonice Pettaway, and Tia Jones from last year.
Tonya Winfield will take over for Coach B.J. Bass who had coached for over 10 years.
“It is tough to fill her shoes, but I am ready for the challenge though,” Coach Winfield said.
Brianna Stanton was the only senior to graduate from last year’s team, but she was the leading scorer.
“Brianna was an amazing girl to watch play basketball. She was a leader and a great role model for our team last year,” Winfield said
Senior returnees are Utopia Jones, Ashley Jones, and Darneka Waters.
”They will have to step up and be the leaders for the team this year. They are the key to our success this year. They must be role models to our team,” Winfield said.
“The biggest strength this year is that we are a team and understanding how to share the ball. This is the best strength a team can have,” Winfield said.
“Besides the seniors, we are a very young team; we need to step up our game and play with our hearts,” Winfield said.
“The biggest weakness is shooting the three pointers, but a coach would rather have a team that can get to the goal and make the percentage shot rather then the non percentage shot,” Winfield said.
The Lady Rams lost their opener against South Central 52-45.
“We played with our hearts and gave 110%; South Central was just better than us,” Winfield said.
