Long time coach is in his first year with the Rams

By Trey Cash

Veteran coach David Laton is in his first season coaching the Greene Central men’s basketball team.
The long time coach is starting a new chapter in his basketball coaching career. Laton came from 4-A powerhouse West Forsyth where he compiled a record of 187-39 in 10 years there.
“I wanted a new challenge and wanted to be at a smaller school, than West Forsyth that has over 2,000 students,” said Laton.
“I have over 200 wins and 31 years of coaching experience, and I have coached players like Chris Paul and J.K. Edwards and helped recruited David Roberson to play at the Naval Academy,” Laton said.
He brings to Greene Central an impressive resume, having coached under coaches Lefty Driesell at Maryland and Paul Evans at the U.S. Naval Academy. Laton has also coached at a Division II school in South Carolina, and he served as an assistant at West Point for four years. Most recently, he has coached at West Forsyth High School in western North Carolina for the last 10 years.
“This year will be tough for me; I am adjusting to 2-A basketball. It is a lot different than 4-A basketball,” Laton said.
“Coaching at Greene Central has been fun. I enjoyed every minute of practice and games because the guys love the game,” Laton said.
“Our goal right now is to get better every day. We’re not putting specific goals up. We’re putting in a new system, and we’re learning and adapting. They’re learning the fundamentals as we teach them.” Laton said.
“He’s a pretty good coach,” said senior Marcus Lee. “He’s coached for many years, and he knows what he’s talking about.”
Laton is joined by a new coaching staff, including Eric Lynch, Jason Bracey, and Brian Green.
